FREE show tonight in hollywood

here’s the skinny:

when:  7/31/13 at 9:00pm
coin: FREE
event: https://www.facebook.com/events/497740336971661/
where:
The Vibe Hotel
5922 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90028

who:
DJ Just @ 8pm
the breakups @ 9pm

The Pacific @ 10pm

Let’s not kid ourselves, friends.  Making it in Hollywoodland is no walk in the park.  Why, if you ask me, and I know you didn’t, it’s more like a walk in a minefield.  A minefield full of no-goodniks the likes of which your mamma didn’t tell you about.  Either because she didn’t know about them or, more likely, because she did.

Did we know about this minefield when we got into this racket?  Sure we did.  We were prepared to put one foot in front of the other, knowing damn well each step might be our last.  But knowing is a far cry from seeing… smelling… tasting… breathing.  We’ve learned that the hard way.  Like so many before us and those still to come.

But, the way I see it, you’ve only got two choices when you’re this far in it.  You either keep walking or you drop to your knees and pray to god above that it’s quick and painless.

Well we’re not done walking.  Not yet anyway.  And to prove it, we’re playing right in the belly of the beast.  But, like an after-dinner digestif, we will tame that belly.  I’d stake my Pulitzer on it!

a duet with felix

I was just recording a whistling part on a song only to discover that Felix likes to do call and response vocals with whistling.  Therefore, I will now have hours and hours of entertainment that I had no idea was available to me until just now. —Jake

for the faint of heart/Valentine’s Day cover song

image

here’s the skinny:

when:  NOW
coin:  FREE
where:  http://soundcloud.com/the-breakups-covers/youre-breakin-my-heart

We couldn’t let a Valentine’s Day go by without putting out some music.  We’re the breakups for god’s sake.  We embrace the obvious.  Subtlety is overrated and outdated.  And along those lines we chose what might be one of the least subtle anti-love songs ever written to cover for V-Day…  Harry Nilsson’s “You’re Breakin’ My Heart.”  Because what better way to celebrate this heart-felt day than shouting the f-bomb in your lover’s face?

That’s right, before Cee Lo made it adorable and Grammy-worthy, Harry made it desperate and gut-wrenching.  And, as you probably know by now, that’s more our speed.

Download it for FREE and share it with someone who tore your heart out, played hacky-sack with it, fed it to the dog, then shoved it back in upside down.

We would never hurt you,

The Mint Becomes Eclectic (last show of 2012 on Sunday)

here’s the skinny:

when:  12/16/12 at 7:00pm (doors) 9:43pm (the breakups)
coin: $10.00 (whadda you gonna do, it’s The Mint)
event: http://www.facebook.com/events/514069688611797/
where:
The Mint
6010 West Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90035
who:
7:20pm
- Kelsey Bulkin
8:00pm
- ReasonsBE
8:55pm
- Ryan Saliman and the Band of Strangers
9:50pm
- the breakups
10:45pm
- Rico Lucky

It must be Christmastime because my craving for peppermint bark has increased by 110%.  Also because Pope Julius I thought Christianity would appeal more to pagans if Christmas coincided with their celebration of the Winter Solstice, Saturnalia, which honored Saturn, the god of agriculture.  And, of course, the origins of Saturnalia lie in the ancient feast of the Son of Isis, which was celebrated on December 25 when the Babylonians would partake in raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving.  Sounds like college… am I right?

We’re squeezing one last show in before the end of the Mayan calendar.  You know, just in case.  It’s this Sunday at the world-famous the The Mint on Pico Blvd.  We’re not going to tell you what it’s famous for.  They have put together an astonishingly eclectic lineup, including rapper Rico Lucky, whose bio claims he is an extraterrestrial sent down to save “Earth Music.”  So it looks like Christmas might come a little early this year for those in attendance.

We go on at 9:50pm, which means we don’t even know what time to make up that would trick people into showing up on time.  Let’s just all be adults and talk about time like people outside of Los Angeles, with the actual time.  Plan accordingly.  We felt like mixing up the set list a bit, so we’re going to play some very new stuff and some very old stuff.  It’s like no breakups set you’ve never heard.

Happy Saturnalia everybody,

go west young man… literally (show on 10/2)

here’s the skinny:

when:  10/2/12 at 8:00pm
coin: FREE
event: http://www.facebook.com/events/427198407336310/
where:
The Central SAPC
1348 14th St,
Santa Monica, CA 90404
who:
8pm College Kids
9pm the breakups
10pm Go West Young Man
11pm Sheera

People talk.  There’s no way around it.  You’ll hear things said about the east side by westsiders, you’ll hear things said about the west side by eastsiders, you might even hear things said by northsiders and southsiders if that’s a thing that happens.

the breakups aren’t into picking sides, mostly because we’re convinced that everybody is against us.  As long as there’s good food within walking distance I don’t care if I’m in Torrance.  Uhm… okay, that might be a little extreme.  I generally care if I’m in Torrance.  But that’s neither here nor there… one can hope.

The Central Social Aid and Pleasure Club has been good to us and we are excited to be playing there once again on Tuesday to kick off the Go West Young Man October residency.  Our good friends College Kids will be opening up the night.  I’m just gonna go ahead and guarantee that fun will be had by several people that night.  Maybe even you.

Also, Jake and Blake of the breakups will make an appearance at The World Record’s album release show on Thursday at The Echoplex, with a powerfully succinct acoustic set at 9pm.  Please come support The World Record as they release their record into the world.  We will be collecting more words that rhyme with Jake, Blake, break, and make that night as well.

watch your hands,

last minute show at Lot 1 OR the beginning of nothing

here’s the skinny:

when:  9/8/12 at 11:00pm
coin: $5 donation
event: http://www.facebook.com/events/139808832829346/
where:
Lot 1
1533 Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
who:
9pm - Ruthann Friedman
10pm - Soular Brothers
11pm - the breakups
12am - Eugene Carmel

With this recent rash of earthquakes no doubt leading unflinchingly toward the end of the Mayan calendar, what choice do we have but to distract ourselves from the end times with some good old musical-entertainment-show-biz-fun?  What is music if not math?  And we all know how the Mayans felt about math… they felt good about it!

In conclusion, the best way to honor the Mayans and yourselves is to seek out quality entertainment that will fill your hearts with joy, your souls with warmth, your brains with happy tears, and your ears with ROCK.

We play Lot 1 tomorrow at 11pm.  Don’t think of it as the end of the world… think of it as the beginning of nothing.

And the band played on,

show on tuesday OR the rise of the lizard people

here’s the skinny:

when:  8/21/12 at 8:00pm
coin: FREE
event:  http://www.facebook.com/events/457915240893419
where:
The Central Social Aid and Pleasure Club
1348 14th St.
Santa Monica, CA 90404
Owls - 8pm
the breakups - 9pm
The Ross Sea Party - 10pm
Dylan Trees - 11pm

Tired of sitting in a pool of your own sweat?  Just wondering.  We offer no solutions other than reducing your carbon footprint on the off chance that it’s not too late to reverse the slow, painful extinction of the human race.  Then again, maybe global warming will eventually, through years of evolution, result in the rise of the lizard people, and who hasn’t had that on their wishlist since they were seven-years-old?  We will have thick, rough, scaly skin, need very little water, and we will, of course, look totally bad-ass.  So maybe this is all for the best.  BRING ON THE HEAT WAVES!

So what we’ve learned today, kids, is that there’s always a way to spin things toward the positive side of the dial if the eventual results are lizard people roaming the earth with their awesome lizard tongues.  Apply this logic to your every-day-lives and happiness, contentment, and social competence will bloom like hot-weather vegetation in your soul.

ALSO… We’re playing a show on Tuesday with one of our favorite bands in the world, The Ross Sea Party.  It’s been a while since we hit up the west side and we’re excited to play The Central again.  We had a lot of fun out last time there.  Blake is back and you all know what that means…

See you in Santa Monica b-uppers!

Downtown Summer Party this Saturday

here’s the skinny:

when:  7/28/12 at 4:00pm (first band at 2:00pm)
coin: FREE
where:
The Down And Out (at the Alexandria Hotel)
501 S Spring St

Los Angeles, CA 90013

Everybody’s got a thing they’re doing.  It takes confidence laced with a healthy dose of self-delusion.  Add a dash of compulsive need for attention, love, and validation and you’ve got yourself an artist (depending on whether you think an artist is someone who makes something he/she thinks is art or something you think is art).  L.A. is full of them.  And this Saturday many of them will be playing the Downtown Summer Party at The Down And Out and Coronado’s, including us… the breakups.  It’ll be a full day of music and memories with sound by Swing House Studios.  It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that Swing House Studios (not their official motto).

Be sure to arrive early for $1 tacos at Coronado’s from 2pm to 3pm and $1 PBRs from The Down And Out from 3pm to 4pm.  And all of that cheap crap will lead tidily up to our set at 4:30pm.  Could we ask for a better lead-in than $1 PBRs?  Yes.  But still…

Also, this show will mark the triumphant return of Blake Collins on the bass guitar.  The hair… the face… the sweet, sweet bass.  We’re delighted to have him back.

Take a deep breath… and we will see you on Saturday afternoon.
